Dolly Parton has shared the heartbreaking news that her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, has passed away at the age of 82. She revealed the news on Instagram, mentioning that he died on Monday in Nashville. While she did not disclose the cause of his death, Dolly expressed her deep grief, saying, “Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years.”
Dolly has always described her relationship with Carl as special, saying they are not just partners, but also best friends. She believes that their strong bond is rooted in their compatibility, adding, “We’re just really very compatible.” Dolly also mentioned that they have a lot of respect and love for each other, and humor plays a huge role in their relationship. “We both have a crazy, warped sense of humor, so we had a lot of fun. That helps a lot,” she said.
Their love story began in a surprising and somewhat ironic way. Dolly recalled that they met at a laundromat, and their connection was immediate. “It was just too ironic,” Dolly said, noting that Carl, who is typically shy and reserved, rarely approaches people. Yet, in this case, he took the initiative to start a conversation with her. As time passed, they both realized that their meeting was fate.
After two years of dating, Dolly, at 18, and Carl, at 21, eloped in Georgia. Dolly shared that she has always tried to keep Carl out of the public eye as much as possible. “He said, ‘I didn’t choose this world, I chose you, and you chose that world, but we can keep our lives separate and together,’” she explained. Their ability to balance their private lives with the public spotlight has been a key to their long-lasting relationship.
Throughout their marriage, Carl remained largely out of the public view. Dolly often joked about how he was “too pretty” and she was afraid to let him out into the limelight. Over the years, Dolly occasionally shared throwback photos of her and Carl, giving fans a glimpse of their enduring love. “I love the old guy,” Dolly said. “He’s the only one I’ve ever wanted and the only one I’ll ever have.”
Dolly’s words reflect a lifetime of deep affection and respect for Carl, and her tribute to him paints a picture of a love that was not only romantic but also built on friendship, humor, and mutual respect. As they celebrated nearly six decades of marriage, it’s clear that Carl Dean was a constant and loving presence in Dolly’s life.
