JEOPARDY! fans are on a mission to revive the iconic Clue Crew, which got the axe in 2022, leaving viewers heartbroken.
The chic four-member team delivered quality remote video clues from every corner of the globe until it was abruptly disbanded after two decades.
The Clue Crew was hand-picked by the late Alex Trebek in 2001 from a staggering pool of 5000 applicants.
The field correspondents appeared in the video clues from all seven continents (yes, even Antarctica!) to the giant keyboard from the movie Big.
Fans adored the surprise element when the Clue Crew popped up in new locations, making it a shocking blow when Jeopardy! pulled the plug after 21 years.
The absence of the Clue Crew became a hot topic in a Jeopardy! Reddit forum on Friday, where fans agreed it’s a giant loss.
Now, there aren’t remote video clues besides the occasional celebrity coming to fans from their homes via Zoom.
‘WE MISS THEM!’
A fan titled their thread: “I just realized we haven’t had a clue crew question in forever, right?”
“I know some are stagehands now, and COVID also kind of made it go away, so I think that’s why we haven’t seen them. I now miss it.”
Two of its original members – Sarah Whitcomb Foss and Jimmy Maguire – stayed on staff as producer and stage manager, respectively.

One fan replied: “The clue crew was officially disbanded a long time ago. No ‘I think’ about it.”
Other fans replied: “Was there ever any kind of official explanation, or just budget reasons?”
And: “I’m happy for Jimmy and Sarah but I miss seeing them in the clues, I always loved them.”
Another fan joked: “They could always reform. Clue Crew: Age Of Ultron.”
A fifth wrote: “They were disbanded upon Alex (Rest his soul)’s death.”
CLUE THE TEARS!
Trebek’s trademark team, which was definitely an expense but brought production value to the game, announced their disbandment in 2022.
The statement read: “For more than two decades, Sarah Whitcomb Foss and Jimmy McGuire traveled the world shooting clues for Jeopardy! as members of the Clue Crew.
“And now, after 21 seasons exploring more than 300 cities, 46 countries, all 50 states and seven continents, the two are setting aside their luggage and passports and stepping into new roles with the show.
“For her part, Sarah will continue working as a producer, a role she was promoted to during Season 38.
“At the same time, Jimmy has settled nicely into his new role as Jeopardy!’s stage manager, overseeing much of what goes on behind the scenes during tapings.”
Often, the clue crew traveled with the late Alex – who had a thirst for travel.
“Machu Picchu was another trip Sarah and I took with Alex where we had a very surreal moment,” Jimmy Maguire recalled in the statement.
“Alex had a kidney stone and he hiked all the way up the mountain.
“When it was time to leave, he was in severe pain, and to see him muscle through that was just another time we got to see how tough he was.”
‘PLUCKY YOUNG PEOPLE IN SCOOBY DOO VAN’
Now-host Ken Jennings didn’t hide his shady opinion of the Clue Crew in a recent on-stage Q&A.
He said: “We hope to do more remote clues, but it won’t be plucky young people driving around in a Scooby Doo van.”
Ken wasn’t far off, however, as former Clue Crew member Foss shared: “We did drive around in a Brain Bus for a period of time.”
“It had Alex’s image and the Clue Crew image on it. It was a Winnebago we wrapped in Jeopardy! photos and imagery.
“We’d do contestant searches and live events in it – like a clown car of Jeopardy! folks.”
The Clue Crew and its bus was how hopefuls would audition via regional tryout; the Brain Bus would roll into major cities- but now there’s the Anytime test, so auditions have moved online.
BIG CHANGES
Meanwhile, former champ Ken is now the sole host after Mayim Bialik was fired from the syndicated series in December.
The hosting drama is far from the only change to Jeopardy!, as executive producer Michael Davies replaced the disgraced Mike Richards in 2021.
Davies filled a job that, before them, hadn’t changed hands in decades either.
The new showrunner has not been shy in tweaking tradition, Clue Crew’s disbandoment aside.
Davies has ushered in the ongoing slate of Wildcard and Second Chance tournaments that have consumed Season 40.
He also displayed where Daily Doubles were located to viewers during Jeopardy! Masters, created a new intro, a split-screen clue selection display for Celebrity Jeopardy! and a new Triple Jeopardy! round for the celebrity spinoff.
He also enacted the new rule where contestants have to say category names in full, which has infuriated fans.
And all of this in just his first two years on the job.
