A JEOPARDY! contestant who gave current champ Adriana Harmeyer a run for her money baffled fans with a particularly odd Daily Double miss.

The slip-up was surprising because the clue was about an event that was nearly impossible for any U.S. citizen to avoid knowing about.

On Wednesday, Adriana, who’d win her 11th of 13 wins for $299,050 total, faced Enzo Cunanan and Connor Townsend.

Enzo landed on the Jeopardy! round’s Daily Double under “Nature.”

Ken Jennings read, “You heard this 8-letter word a lot in relation to the April 8, 2024, solar eclipse; Mazatlán, Mexico was in the path of it.”

Enzo could not come up with anything and just shook his head, “no,” he said.

Jeopardy!’s Ken Jennings accused of ‘screwing over’ contestant with ‘tricky’ question

“The path of ‘totality,” Ken said, explaining the correct response. “The path where you can see the total solar eclipse.”

‘FACE SLAPPER’

Fans skyrocketed to Reddit, where they were stunned that Enzo, who ended up with $16,400 to Adriana’s $20,000 in final, didn’t get it.

The entire country witnessed the 2024 Solar Eclipse, so fans didn’t know how he could be unaware of the term from the nation-uniting moment.

“Enzo was very good but surprised to see him miss on “totality” on the daily double. That seemed very easy to me,” one person wrote.

“We heard that word a lot here in Indiana,” another agreed.

“I was surprised too but I bet it was a face slapper for him, as it was for me,” wrote a third.

A fourth wrote, “Maybe he got stuck on thinking of eight-letter words instead of just filling in the answer.”

Others wondered if it was because the episode was recorded before the eclipse as the game show tapes weeks in advance.

“Do we know when the episode was recorded? If the eclipse hadn’t happened yet, it’s more understandable to miss.”

Another replied that it was recorded on May 7, which was a month after the solar eclipse on April 8, 2024 – so, no.

CHALLENGER LOSES IN ODD WAY

Meanwhile, Adriana eked out an incredible 13th win on Friday in her closest match yet.

In the Jeopardy! Round, Adriana once again caught fire with $7,200 and a $1000 Daily Double gain, Susan had $3,000, and Kaitlin $3,800.

In Double Jeopardy!, things got competitive as Kaitlin took the lead but missed the second Daily Double.

Kaitlyn regained the lead for the second time on the last Daily Double, and once more right before Final Jeopardy.

It seemed possible that the West Lafayette, Indiana archivist might be history going into Final Jeopardy!, as she was in second place.

Kaitlyn had $12,800, Adriana $12,400, and Susan $10,200.

It all hinged on “1960s AMERICA” and the clue, “Helping draft an executive order in 1961, Hobart Taylor Jr. almost used the word ‘positive’, but instead chose this alliterative phrase.”

Susan wrote, “?” and wagered everything from third place, which Ken said was “probably the smart bet,” though an argument could be made against that.

Adriana, whom Ken pointed out “for the first time in her entire run did not have the lead heading into final,” correctly wrote “Affirmative Action.”

She added $8,100 to take back the lead with $20,500.

It all came down to Kaitlin who wrote “?” – surprisingly, she only wagered $410 and was left with $12,390.

Adriana shook her head in astonishment as she was declared the winner in a nail-biting comeback.

“Adriana Harmeyer survives her biggest scare yet!” Ken announced as her tremendous 13-day total was displayed.

Fans flooded social media to praise Adriana’s toughest win yet, but some pointed out Kaitlyn’s flawed Final Jeopardy wager.

She bet so little that if she were correct on Final, she’d still lose; in other words, she would have lost regardless.

“WHAT A FINISH!!! And what was with the wager by the first-place contestant going into final?” one Facebook user asked.

“Adriana would have won even if Kaitlin had been correct, as she made a tiny bet, apparently hoping for her opponents to miss,” another Redditor posted.

“Adriana’s gonna be tough to beat so long as she continues to get FJ correct. Granted in this case since Kaitlin didn’t get to cover it wouldn’t have really mattered if she had also been correct,” noted a third.

“I’ve gotta be honest, I assumed Adriana was done once I saw the FJ clue. I’m very surprised that she squeaked through!” rejoiced a fourth.

Other fans pointed out that Adriana has gone a dazzling 10/12 on Final Jeopardy, which has become quite an Achilles heel.

“Adriana is a monster at FJ,” wrote one more.

“85% right after 13 games is pretty phenomenal; most superchamps average in the 70s or lower.”
