Jason Momoa and Jack Black are teaming up for the first time in the upcoming Minecraft movie, hitting theaters on April 4th. This live-action adaptation of the best-selling video game brings the block-building world of Minecraft to the big screen in an adventure comedy format.

Momoa shared how the collaboration began: “About a month ago, Jason called me and said, ‘I’m making sweaters. What are your colors?’ I told him blue, green, and purple. He said, ‘Done.’ Click. And here we are—a tremendous gift.” The two actors play characters who develop a brotherly bond, and their on-screen chemistry is evident. Black commented on their connection: “It’s like we’ve been brothers all along. It shows on screen—100%.”

For fans wondering about the Minecraft phenomenon, Momoa explained, “Kids love the creativity of building in Minecraft. You can create anything you dream of by stacking blocks to build incredible structures, homes, and more.” He expressed excitement about how the game might inspire a new generation of architects and creatives.

The challenge for the filmmakers was crafting a story around a game with no inherent narrative. The movie introduces an original plot where characters are pulled into Minecraft’s universe, blending live-action with animation. Black assured fans, “We worked closely with Mojang Studios to ensure the movie stays true to Minecraft lore. Expect tons of Easter eggs and authentic elements from the game.”

Black plays a character who initially knows nothing about Minecraft but grows throughout the story, learning valuable life lessons and forming friendships. “It’s a human story at its core,” Black said. “We aim to respect gamers while also creating a film that’s enjoyable for everyone.”

Both actors encouraged audiences to bring kids to the movie, emphasizing the fun and humor in the film. Black laughed, “I laughed my ass off watching it. It’s packed with ridiculous jokes and moments that will crack you up.” Momoa added, “Seeing kids react to this world is the best part. It’s pure joy.”

Momoa also reflected on moments when he felt most loved, citing his first time performing on stage at a Passover Seder as a child: “That electric jolt of putting on a show hooked me immediately.” Black shared a recent highlight: dancing with Meryl Streep at SNL’s 50th anniversary. “I wanted to introduce myself because she’s one of the goddesses of acting. Then we danced—it was surreal!”

Looking ahead, Momoa teased his return to the DC universe as Lobo, a character he’s long wanted to play. “Peter Safran has supported me since Aquaman, so it’s incredible to have this opportunity,” he said. While details are scarce, Momoa hinted at more to come: “It’s unbelievable. The hype is real—expect more Lobo in the future.”

Black revealed he recently finished filming Anaconda with Paul Rudd, Steven Yeun, and Tandy Newton, describing it as a mix of horror and comedy. “I bring both the funny and the scary. I’ve got levels—I’m not a one-trick pony,” Black joked.

The Minecraft movie promises to be a fun, creative adventure for fans and newcomers alike, blending humor, action, and heartfelt moments in the blocky world of Minecraft.
