HE’S a modern day guitar hero who dragged garage rock into the 21st Century before launching an acclaimed solo career.
Following the release of his latest record, No Name, last year, the US star’s appetite for balls to the wall riff-rock has been replenished.
He’s been levelling intimate venues with a wall of distorted noise ever since and the UK was recently treated to the blues-infected tones of his guitar.
In keeping with the spit and sawdust feel of his recent travels, Jack White, 49, chose to take public transport between gigs.
He hopped on an Avanti train days ago to travel between Birmingham and Glasgow for a show at the famous Barrowland Ballroom.
He wrote on Instagram: “Traveling by train again from Birmingham England to the show in Glasgow Scotland today.
“So nice to be able to travel this way between gigs. Scottish crowds are so unbelievably energetic too, it makes me proud of my father’s ancestry.
“The crowd was on fire tonight and was so great to play a historical venue in the Barrowland Ballroom.
“The Mrs. and I took photos of each other on the train and old swanny got a photo of the security camera too. Thank you much to all the fans in Scotland and at all of our shows this run. Too much love to take in.”
In one shot, Jack gazed out at green fields, his familiar jet black hair parted down the middle.
Another shot taken of the CCTV screen showed him relaxing opposite wife Olivia Jean, a small table separating them.
Fans were shocked to see him riding the familiar service.
One commented: “Can’t believe you guys got on an Avanti in Birmingham, obsessed.”
Another joked: “Can’t believe you risked the entire Glasgow show by travelling with the most unreliable train operator in the UK.”
A third posted: “Imagine you’re traveling on the same train as a music legend.”
A fourth said: “My cousin text me saying she had seen you on the train, I thought she was bullshitting me.”
White’s been prolific since the release of The White Stripes’ debut album in 1999.
The duo, consisting of White on guitar and vocals and ex-wife Meg on drums and backing vocals, put out six albums over an eight year period culminating in their final release, Icky Thump, in 2007.
That record debuted at number one in the UK and, though recorded in Nashville, its title was inspired by the Lancashire phrase ecky thump – a nod to his Oldham born ex-wife, Karen Elson.
White has release three albums with The Raconteurs and the same number with The Dead Weather, which also feature The Kills’ Alison Mosshart.
He’s released six studio solo albums via his own label, Third Man Records, and the style of songs differs greatly from avant-garde, to rap, country and rock ‘n’ roll.
White’s worked with countless artists including country icon Loretta Lynn and her Grammy-winning album Van Lear Rose.
