Train heists are apparently still taking place. And, over the past year, they’ve resulted in thousands of Jordan sneakers being stolen.

Air Jordans are the most coveted sneakers on the planet, and they sell for a pretty penny. New Js generally cost around $200 and can go for well over $1,000, which is why some folk will do anything to get them.

As such, a set of criminals operating in the California and Arizona areas have been targeting trains carrying the shoes in bulk.

According to a report from The Los Angeles Times“at least 10” train heists have taken place on the West Coast since last March, with nine of them yielding sneakers. The criminal operations have reportedly resulted in an estimated $2 million of footwear being stolen.

The most recent one took place on January 13, when the thieves cut an air brake hose on a BNSF freight train in Arizona. They stole 1,985 pairs of unreleased Nikes worth over $440,000 – many of those were the Nigel Sylvester x Air Jordan 4, with a collaboration scheduled for release in March.

“Theft crews typically scout high-value merchandise on rail lines that parallel Interstate 40 by boarding slow-moving trains, such as when they are changing tracks and opening containers, said Keith Lewis, vice president of operations at Verisk’s CargoNet and a deputy sheriff in Arizona,” the Times noted.
