Kelly Clarkson 'All I Wanna Do' Cover Gets Sheryl Crow Approval Stamp

Thirty-one years ago (somehow) Sheryl Crow declared, All I wanna do is have some fun, assuming (correctly) that she wasn’t the only one. Based off “Fun,” a 1987 Wyn Cooper poem, “All I Wanna Do” earned the Missouri singer-songwriter a pair of Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year. Now 63, she has sold more than 50 million albums and collected just a few more trophies. And after Kelly Clarkson’s stellar cover of Sheryl Crow’s breakthrough hit, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer says that “All I Wanna Do” no longer belongs to her.

Sheryl Crow Approves of This Kelly Clarkson Cover

Nearly a decade after Sheryl Crow got her start, Kelly Clarkson rose to fame as the first-ever winner of American Idol. In 2019, the “Miss Independent” singer, 42, returned to the small screen, this time heading up her own NBC talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show.

In a callback to her Idol days, Clarkson typically performs another artist’s song during the show’s popular Kellyoke segment. During Tuesday’s (April 8) episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, the Emmy Award winner took on Crow’s 1994 hit.

Keeping the vocals understated, Clarkson lets Crow’s lyrics speak for themselves: ‘All I wanna do is have a little fun before I die’/ Says the man next to me out of nowhere/ It’s apropos of nothing, he says his name is William/ I’m sure he’s Bill or Billy or Mac or Buddy/ And he’s plain ugly to me / And I wonder if he’s ever had a day of fun in his whole life.

The cover earned Crow’s stamp of approval, with the “If It Makes You Happy” singer writing on Instagram, “Good grief Kelly Clarkson could sing the damn phone book! I love this version better than mine!!”

Fans Praise “One of a Kind” Sheryl Crow

While social media users predictably raved over Kelly Clarkson’s latest cover, many took some time to recognize Sheryl Crow as well.

“my inner 9 year old from the 2000’s has this entire album memorized,” one fan wrote. (Same.) “You are a legend and so is Kelly.”

Another added, “She did great but you are one of a kind!!!”
