'We couldn’t find that spark’ - How Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Andy Reid reacted to Kansas City Chief’s Super Bowl defeat

The Kansas City Chiefs were left stunned after suffering a 40-22 humbling at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX.

A dominant defensive performance, backed up by an MVP-winning turn by Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, emphatically ended the Chiefs three-peat dreams, with the team’s key men left wondering where it went wrong.

“Obviously the turnovers hurt, I take all the blame for that,” a dejected Patrick Mahomes said following the game. “Those early turnovers swing the momentum of the game and they capitalized on them. They scored on one and they got a touchdown immediately after, so that’s 14 points I kinda gave them.

“It’s hard to come back from that in a Super Bowl. Just didn’t play up to my standard and I have to play better next time.”

Mahomes was intercepted twice in quick succession in the second quarter, the first of which was returned for a touchdown by birthday boy Cooper DeJean, with his second pick occurring in his own red zone, as the Eagles quickly taking advantage by scoring another touchdown.

Travis Kelce is normally Mahomes’ favourite target, but the tight end also struggled, catching just four passes for 39 yards. And while that meant he broke Jerry Rice’s record for the most receptions in Super Bowl history, a dejected Kelce had little to say.

“We haven’t played that bad all year,” he bemoaned. “[We] just couldn’t find that spark, couldn’t find that momentum.”

Head coach Andy Reid also addressed the defeat.

“Today was a rough day,” Reid said. “Didn’t play well in any of the phases. Didn’t coach good enough — they did a nice job. I’m proud of our guys, though.

“We’ll learn from this — like most games here when you don’t do very well. You learn from it as a coach and learn from it as a player and move on.”

The Chiefs were targeting a first-ever Super Bowl three-peat, but Reid insists that this did not result in any added pressure.

“Listen, I don’t think so,” Reid added. “It’s best against best. So, I think we were more focused on that than three-peats and all that stuff.

“That wasn’t the issue.”
