THE VIEW’s Joy Behar has opened up about a disturbing childhood memory during an on-air discussion about nudity on Friday.
The subject came up as the co-hosts broached the topic of Bradley Cooper’s recent admission that he often hangs out naked at his home, which he shares with his 6-year-old daughter Lea.
Bradley, who shares his daughter with his ex Irina Shayk, made the reveal on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast last week.
With Joy leading the conversation as the moderator on Friday, amid Whoopi Goldberg’s weekly day off, the 81-year-old turned the discussion toward her own childhood.
While The View host said she “never saw anything” NSFW when she was at home, she did see quite a bit when she went out to Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY.
“These men would wear these loose drawers, and Mr. Happy would fall out,” Joy said, before admitting it was all “so traumatizing.”
She said she was only about 10 years old when this took place.
Joy added that she would also stumble across naked women in the bath houses there, as well.
Right before the 81-year-old shared her childhood story, Ana Navarro joked about how happy she is that she never saw her parents in the nude growing up.
“I’m just glad I made it to 52 without seeing my father’s schlong or my mother’s hoo-ha,” the political commentator said. “That would put me in therapy.”
Sunny Hostin quickly agreed with her colleague.
Sara Haines, meanwhile, said that while she doesn’t “enjoy walking around naked” at home, she’ll often take her time putting lotion on her body after her showers.
She said her kids sometimes come running in while she’s in the middle of the process, but she doesn’t cover up to “make a deliberate effort for them to not feel ashamed of their bodies.”
Fans can expect to learn more about Joy’s life and read more about her experiences when her new memoir comes out.
She recently announced that she’s writing a book about her past.
According to its publisher, Regalo Press, the project will showcase Joy’s “acute powers of observation and her ability to vividly recreate the little details and fleeting moments that make up a lifetime.”
The publisher also said that it will “please both longtime fans and newcomers alike.”
While not exactly an autobiography, the new book will be non-fiction and will focus on subjects that Joy is familiar with, including relatives, hair, erections, bullies and romance.
