SCREAM star Matthew Lillard looked totally different from his 90s acting heyday during an appearance at Illinois Comic Con over the weekend.
The 54-year-old actor, best known for portraying Stu Macher —Ghostface’s accomplice — in the 1996 hit slasher film left fans buzzing.
Matthew was seen on stage at the Comic-Con Fan Expo at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center on Sunday, August 18, in Rosemont, Illinois.
Speaking on stage, Matthew could be seen sporting a black T-shirt with a white heart graphic in the center.
He teamed the look with a baseball cap, glasses, and friendship bracelets on his wrist.
Matthew looked very different from his role in hit slasher over 26 years ago, now rocking gray facial hair.
The father-of-three, who hails from Michigan, played Stu in Scream. In the end, the teen is known as the main protagonist Billy Loomis’s accomplice.
Stu helped Billy with a slew of brutal murders, as well as being Billy’s insensitive and eccentric best friend, who often had a strange sense of humor.
In the flick, Stu is a horror movie fanatic who goes along with Billy’s slasher-film-like murder spree.
In 2023, Matthew opened up about his memorable role in the classic movie.
“I don’t really care about Stu Macher,” he told Collider in an interview.
“It’s a part I played. It’s like if you’re a plumber, do you care about the house you did down the street and around the corner? No, it’s your job.”
He then gushed over how he loved having the job of playing Stu, noting that it was “nice” to have in his resume, but added, “the reality is that it’s a part I did 20-plus years ago.”
“So, what is important to me is that what it means to other people is deeply relevant when you see them all the time, and powerful. It’s not something I understood before that,” the Hollywood star shared.
Aside from his role of Stu/Ghostface in Scream where he plays an actual killer, Matthew is also known and loved for playing the goofy character of Shaggy in the Scooby-Doo movies.
In 2019, Matthew spoke about his role as Shaggy when he spilled to Vice that when getting into character, he would scream himself hoarse to sound like he had a broken voice.
“It’s not like I’m the guy walking around parties doing impressions and I was the first guy they saw to audition for the part, so I figured I’d better do a good job and the only way I could figure out how to do the voice at first was like, get hoarse so I sounded crazy,” he said.
“But, after I got the job, I quickly realized I couldn’t do that every single day of work. Early on, you figure out that everything he does takes place right on that break. And now I do [the voice] twice a week,” the actor admitted.
Matthew’s film resume also includes parts in She’s All That, and the remake of the flick, He’s All That.
He also appeared in 2001’s Summer Catch alongside Freddie Prinze Jr., the latter who starred in his own slasher film, I Know What You Did Last Summer.
Matthew starred in the hit NBC series Good Girls as well, playing Dean Boland, the husband of Christina Hendricks‘ character Beth Boland.
Good Girls ran on NBC from 2018 until 2021, and it follows three mothers from Michigan who are going through a financial crisis and plan a heist wherein they decide to rob a supermarket before it backfires in a big way.
Matthew spoke about the cancellation of Good Girls in 2021 when he told Us Weekly, “So for me it was — it was heartbreaking. And I think [it was] for everyone, I think for all the women involved.
“Strong women led by a strong female producer, and it just fell between the cracks of Hollywood business. And it was really a bummer.”
