BUFFY the Vampire Slayer is making a comeback with a brand-new sequel series – but will any of the original cast return?
Hollywood actress Sarah Michelle Gellar has finally broken her silence on the much-anticipated reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, 22 years after the original show ended.

While she’s thrilled to see the iconic series return, the legendary vampire slayer admitted that the comeback is “nerve-wracking” – leaving fans desperate to know what’s in store for the next chapter of the cult classic.
The legendary supernatural drama Buffy the Vampire Slayer captivated audiences for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003, launching the careers of stars like Alyson Hannigan, David Boreanaz, Nicholas Brendon, and Charisma Carpenter.
Now, fans are on the edge of their seats after it was confirmed that Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao will helm a follow-up series, with Nora and Lilla Zuckerman among the producers.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, who made the role of Buffy Summers her own, has revealed she will be involved in the project and is determined to make sure the revival is done the right way – especially after the overwhelmingly exciting reaction from fans.
The lead star, 47, explained that it’s “nerve-wracking” to step back into the iconic role, “because you have to do it right.”
She told People Magazine: “I wish there was a better word than overwhelming. It’s heartwarming and exciting and also incredibly nerve-wracking at the same time.
“And I think we have this team in place that is legendary, from Chloe Zhao to the Zucks [Nora and Lilla Zuckerman], to Gail Berman.
“And I think people are going to be pretty impressed.”
According to Deadline, the highly anticipated Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel is inching closer to reality, with Hulu reportedly nearing a pilot order and a writers’ room set to open soon.
While it remains unclear whether Sarah Michelle Gellar will reunite with her original co-stars, the new series has been dubbed the next chapter in the Buffyverse, marking the third installment in the franchise after the hit spin-off Angel.
Sarah will take on an executive producer role alongside Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao and writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman.
Meanwhile, original series producers Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, and Kaz Kuzui are also set to return – making sure the Slayer’s legacy is in good hands.
Sarah had always said she would never return to the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, leaving at its natural conclusion, but she now appears to be having a change of heart.
Her views were prompted by watching the recent Sex and the City and Dexter series reboots and seeing how they have grown from the original.
Sarah has said she would be open to taking on the role of Buffy Summers again in a reboot.
Speaking on The Drew Barrymore Show, Sarah was asked whether she’d consider a return to her old character.
She said: “It’s funny. I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble, and it’s so perfect.”
“But watching Sex and the City [sequel series, And Just Like That] and seeing Dexter, and realising there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’”
She added: “It could be anything. It’s a universe. And it makes you realise that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.”
Playing Buffy Summers helped turn Sarah into a Hollywood leading lady.
She went on to bag roles in Cruel Intentions, Scooby Doo, The Grudge and Scream 2.
She also made various TV cameos including in The Simpsons, American Dad, Sex And The City, Star Wars Rebels and The Big Bang Theory.
Fans were devastated when the iconic series came to an end in 2003 after seven installments.
But last year, the iconic 90s show returned for a spin-off audio series with a twist, Slayers: A Buffyverse Story, which focuses on James Marsters’ character Spike.
The show is available as a nine part audio only series on Audible.
