Defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton agreed to a three-year deal with the Carolina Panthers worth $54.1 million.
He will receive $30.2 million in guaranteed money.
Wharton spent five seasons with the Chiefs and won two Super Bowls.
The 26-year-old also led the team with 8.5 sacks in the 2024 campaign, and Mahomes shared a message to congratulate him on his payday.
“Happy for my dawg!” Mahomes wrote on X.
The Chiefs’ loss of Wharton did come after signing free agents and retaining players from their 2024 AFC Champion squad.
They re-signed Marquise Brown and made Trey Smith the highest-paid offensive guard in the NFL.
Kansas City also signed former San Francisco 49ers left tackle Jaylon Moore to a two-year, $30 million deal, which includes $21.24 million fully guaranteed, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The Chiefs made the move after trading away All-Pro Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears in exchange for a 2026 fourth-round pick.
The trade also gave Kansas City much-needed cap space.
And Kansas City signed a new running back, penning former 49ers running back Elijah Mitchel to a one-year deal worth up to $3.5 million, per Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz.
Wharton joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Missouri S&T in 2020.
He re-signed with the team on a one-year, $2.75 million deal in 2024.
Wharton appeared in 17 games and made 10 starts, posting 29 total tackles and 11 quarterback hits.
He also registered another eight total tackles, two sacks, and three quarterback hits during the postseason.
Wharton will be joining a Panthers squad that had a 5-12 season in 2024.
He will have a chance to receive a larger role for a rebuilding team.
