Wild NFL redraft scenario pays the ultimate disrespect to Patrick Mahomes
You can tell it’s the offseason.
We’re not even two weeks into the offseason and topics are already getting out of hand but hey, that’s the way things go this time of year. The latest example of this was a recent NFL Redraft conducted by Jay Busbee of Yahoo! Sports.
Busbee’s redraft wasn’t the typical redraft you see where it’s from a particular draft year (say, a 2017 redraft where that entire draft is redone with the players who ended up being good going higher than they originally did) but rather an unrealistic scenario where every player becomes available. Busbee used the draft order for the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft meaning the Tennessee Titans had the first pick, the Cleveland Browns the second pick, and so on.
I probably wouldn’t be talking about this if Patrick Mahomes went first or heck, even second. But, since I’m talking about it, you know that’s not what happened. No, Mahomes went fourth in Busbee’s redraft with the Titans taking Josh Allen, the Browns selecting Lamar Jackson, and the Giants going with Joe Burrow. Mahomes finally went off the board when the Patriots took him fourth overall (yeah, just what everyone wants to see, another Patriots dynasty).
I hate to be “that person” but I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that Mahomes has more Super Bowl wins than any of the three quarterbacks taken ahead of him (they have a combined zero Super Bowl wins, in case you were wondering). The top two picks haven’t even been to a Super Bowl yet in their careers while Mahomes has been to five. While Burrow has a Super Bowl appearance under his belt, Mahomes has MVP awards to his name while Burrow has none of those.
NFL Redraft gives Patrick Mahomes more bulletin board material
The argument for putting those three quarterbacks ahead of Mahomes here is that they had the better years than he did. That part makes sense.That being said, it’s hard to argue against rings and Super Bowl appearances. Mahomes knows how to win in those games, something the three guys taken ahead of him in this redraft don’t. Allen’s Bills have lost to Mahomes’ Chiefs every single time the two have faced off in the playoffs. Jackson hasn’t been able to win in the playoffs, boasting a lowly 3-5 record in the postseason. While Burrow has gotten a win over Mahomes’ Chiefs in the playoffs, he lost his only Super Bowl appearance and hasn’t even been to the playoffs the past two seasons.
Putting up gaudy stats in the regular season is nice but you know what’s better than that? Championships. Mahomes has those.
Oh well. ‘Tis the season for ridiculous takes, I guess.
