Political thriller miniseries “Zero Day” released on Netflix, featuring several scenes that were filmed near the border of Connecticut.

The show stars Academy Award-winning actor Robert De Niro as a former U.S. president who emerges from retirement to help investigate a cyberattack that kills thousands of Americans, according to Netflix’s Tudum.

Various locations throughout Westchester County, New York, were used to film the show, including Hilltop Hanover Farm in Yorktown Heights.

“They filmed here last May,” Hilltop Hanover Farm Director Adam Choper said. “End of April they came out for, I believe, four prep days. There was one long day of filming with over 100 folks here from their team, and then they had three days of breakdown, and it was…a giant production.”

The farm served as the location for servers of a hacker’s lair that were on fire, Choper said. Netflix’s team had to clear out the upper level of the farm’s dairy barn to film the scene.

“Their team brought in all these servers and flame bars,” Choper said. “They sort of littered the outside of the barn with rusty farm equipment to make it look like it was a more abandoned place than it is.”

Choper said the farm’s cameo lasted for 30-seconds in episode three of the show. None of the show’s main actors, such as De Niro, were involved in the scene filmed at Hilltop Hanover Farm, but Choper said that it was “fun” to see the farm featured in the Netflix series.

“It’s set in the show in Idaho, our farm’s supposed to be in Idaho,” he said. “So that’s interesting…I enjoyed it very much.”

A portion of Lincoln Avenue in Rye Brook, New York, near the Westchester County Airport, was blocked off by the town police department on May 9, 2024 for the filming of the miniseries, according to photos taken by Westmore NewsDe Niro was seen at two spots on King Street, the Port Chester-based newspaper reported.

Choper said that Hilltop Hanover frequently gets visits from film scouts looking to film there. The farm also served as a filming location for 2011 sci-fi thriller “The Adjustment Bureau,” starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt.

“I’ll be honest, we are picky and make sure that we can continue to grow food and feed our community as our first priority, and then after that, figuring out where the film shoot could fit into that,” Choper said.

While Netflix’s team was shooting for “Zero Day” at the farm, Choper said employees at Hilltop Hanover were harvesting, washing and packing produce. The farm also blocked off school trips from visiting on the day of filming.

“We’re part of Westchester County Parks, so it’s like we have to make sure we’re available to the public, you know, working around those schedules,” Choper said. “It was definitely a lot of work on our end to make sure that they were taking good care of the site, and we were able to continue our operations throughout.”

Other locations in Westchester featured in the show include Town House Diner in White Plains, Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Westchester County Airport and a private home in Mount Pleasant, according to Visit Westchester County.

“We’re proud to have played a role in bringing ‘Zero Day’ to life. Westchester really has it all, and the series took full advantage of the huge diversity of locations we offer,” Director of Westchester County Tourism & Film Natasha Caputo said. “It’s rewarding to see our local landmarks showcased on screen and shared with audiences everywhere.”

Purchase College was also used as a filming location for “Zero Day,” with a back entrance on the college’s campus being turned into a railroad crossing for a trainwreck scene in the show’s first episode. Netflix had requested the police close roads on SUNY Purchase’s campus.

The show originally received approval from the town last year to film in July 2023, but it shut down production in June amid the strike by the Writers Guild of America. The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists went on strike a month later. In February of 2024, the board approved Netflix’s request to use the same location for filming on new dates last May.
