Despite taking place in the 1920s, Taylor Sheridan’s show does a great job of highlighting just how strong women can be

Fans of the hit Yellowstone prequel 1923 know that there is no shortage of powerful women starring in it. From Cara Dutton’s (Helen Mirren) uncanny ability to show people that she is just as strong as her husband to Alexandra of Sussex’s (Julia Schlaepfer) bravery and determination to fight for what she loves, women are truly the glue that holds this historical Western together. And to celebrate them and International Women’s Day on March 8, Woman’s World has an exclusive clip highlighting the show’s women, including spoilers for their upcoming journey in season 2. Scroll on to watch the clip and discover what the cast has to say.

Woman’s World Exclusive ‘1923’ Clip highlighting the women of the show

Helen Mirren & Harrison Ford discuss their fictional marriage

In 1923, Mirren’s character Cara is married to Jacob Dutton (Ford). They deal with things that every married historical Montana couple does: winter, the wilderness and women not having any rights.

“I think what Taylor Sheridan [the show’s creator] does so brilliantly through his female characters [is] all of them have incredible agency and presence in the story,” Mirren said. “He doesn’t use false methods to get these women to be strong. They are legitimately and authentically within the world that they live in.”

“Cara is an absolute case in point,” She continued. “She lives in a world where women didn’t have the vote. They were considered to be objects to be sort of taken care of, and he doesn’t cheat on that. She lives absolutely within that world, but within that world, he gives her this incredible strength of character and agency within the story, and he does that with all of his female characters.”

Also proud of the women’s journey on the show is Mirren’s fictional husband, Ford, who tells her, “There aren’t a lot of women like this one,” while referring both to Mirren and her character Cara.

In season 2, Cara and Jacob are expected to deal with both the cold weather and the consequences of Zane Davis’s (Brian Geraghty) arrest at the end of season 1.

“Will he be able to do his job, which is work for the Duttons? And if not, what does that mean for him? If he can’t have this job anymore, who is he and where is he?” Geraghty told Woman’s World earlier this year, before sharing that his character’s journey this season is “a meaningful storyline for me because it’s actually personal in my own life.”

Geraghty’s character did reunite with Ford’s at the end of season 2, episode 2, but it is unclear if/when they will reunite with the family’s matriarch, Cara Dutton.

Michelle Randolph opens up about how important it is for women to grow and fight

Michelle Randolph plays Elizabeth Dutton in 1923. She is the wife of Jack Dutton (Darren Mann) and the great-niece-in-law of Cara, with whom she forms a unique and special bond in season 1.

“Just to see where Elizabeth began in season 1 and where she ends in season 2 is such a cool arc,” Randolph said. “She is figuring out what it means to live in Montana and what it’s like to be a part of a family that’s constantly under attack.”

Throughout season 1, Elizabeth goes through a devastating miscarriage, which led many to believe she could never have children. Then, in season 2, she begins her journey by being bitten by a potentially rabid wolf and is forced to get the rabies medicine against her will.

“I think this is a testament to how strong Elizabeth is that she is willing to fight,”  Randolph said. “She’s going to go down, she’s going to go down, fighting. I think it just shows how much love and loyalty she does have for the family and that she does want to stick around.”

“I just find it really inspiring.”

Randolph is 27 years old, and 1923 is considered her breakout role.

Julia Schlaepfer spills how much Alexandra & Spencer’s love story means to her

When it comes to Alexandra Dutton, she is certainly not shy about her feelings for her husband, Spencer (Brandon Sklenar). The pair met in season 1 while on an African safari and quickly fell in love and got married. Sadly though at the end of the season, they were split up after Spencer kills Alexandra’s ex-fiancé, Arthur, the Earl of Sussex (Bruce Davison).

“I knew it was going to be the first time that Alexander sees Spencer unleash that violent part of himself, both while he’s beating [Arthur] up, and then when he throws him overboard,” Schlaepfer told Woman’s World earlier this year.  “Watching someone you love kill another person is a very scary thing and definitely something for her to keep in mind. And I think it sticks with her. I think it scares her a little bit at that moment, because that sort of violence that he probably experienced in the war is not something that she’s ever been used to seeing.”

In season 2, Alex’s journey is largely going to be about her reuniting with Spencer in Montana so they can help with the ranch and begin to parent their unborn child, which Schlaepfer is partially excited about.

“I think what makes Alex so strong specifically is that everything she does this season and all of the strength that she finds comes from a selfless place,” the actress said. “She’s doing it for her family and for her baby. Everything that she goes through is entirely for her future family. She’s willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for them, and I think that’s really special for her.”

“I feel so honored to get to play this character, which is really just a dream role. I just find it really inspiring.”

Schlaepfer is 30  years old and is originally from Bellevue, Washington.

Aminah Nieves talks about trauma and how to move beyond it

In season 1 of 1923, Aminah Nieves’s character, Teonna Rainwater, goes through a treacherous journey after enrolling in an abusive Catholic boarding school. While there, she is tortured both mentally and physically in an attempt to rid her character of her Native American heritage.  Thankfully, Teonna does escape and sets off to reunite with her people, but not before killing her abuser, Sister Mary (Jennifer Ehle).

“You see her surrendering and opening up to being a woman in pain and suffering, but also in faith and determination,” Nieves said. “When you’re born, especially if you carry a womb, a piece of your mother’s womb, of your grandmother’s womb and your great-grandmother’s womb is now part of you. So you carry those traumas, you carry those emotions, that strength with her. I mean, it’s undeniable.”

Teonna’s journey in season 2 is expected to be centered around her reinitiating her Native American roots while also hiding from Father Renaud  (Sebastian Roché), who is currently on a mission to hunt her down and kill her.

“As an artist, I believe that that’s what we’re meant to do, so to be able to share a part of true history that not a lot of people know about because it’s been so well kept away from them is really important,” Nieves told Woman’s World.

“Being Indigenous, I think it’s my duty as an artist to be consistent with where I stand as a person that demands a revolution and is kind of living in an abolitionist way, and to speak out on injustices around the world.”
