Coronation Street fans admitted to ‘sobbing’ as Sally Metcalfe risked her life against Mick Michaelis as he escaped prison in new scenes.

The murderer has been behind bars after the shock killing of PC Craig Tinker in the line of duty. But following news that his family are falling apart and his wife, Lou, is in trouble, a dramatic episode on Monday (July 14) saw Mick break free from prison.

From his cell, Mick was planning a new life with Lou, their son Brody and daughters Joanie and Shanice. In cahoots with teenager Brody, he was seen calling at No.4 for his little sisters, only to hear that Joanie is at a taster day at Weatherfield High.

Having found Brody with Shanice, his biological grandmother Bernie Winter seemingly cottoned on to his plan to do a runner, and took the pair back to Kit Green’s flat.

Meanwhile, at the prison, Mick climbed under a laundry van before later dropping down into the street, after Brody had tipped him off that Joanie was at Weatherfield High.

When Brody, who is helping him escape, tells Mick, who has climbed under a laundry van before later dropping down into the street, turns up at the school, but Sally Metcalfe has already picked Joanie up after the youngster is upset by the kids’ comments about her parents, with Lou now also in prison for her attack on Gary Windass.

Lou finds herself being questioned about Mick’s escape by PC Jess Heywood, but denies all knowledge. Meanwhile Daniel Osbourne and Mrs Crawshaw are shocked to come face to face with Mick, who demands they hand Joanie over.

When Mick learns Joanie is gone, Mick locks the pair in the office and flees. He soon heads for the street, where Sally is showing Joanie around Underworld. With Kit now aware of Mick’s escape, he’s also in pursuit and spots him making his way to the factory.

Charging into the factory to find Joanie, Mick held Tim and Sarah Platt hostage in the office. Kit followed and things got heated between the enemies as Mick became aware that Joanie had been smuggled onto the roof by Sally in a bid to escape.

Sally was seen trying to comfort the youngster as the chaos unravelled in the factory below. “It’s going to be alright, and when it is, we’ll go back down. But for now, let’s just sit up here, together,” Sally told Joanie.

To keep distracted, Sally started talking to Joanie about Sophie’s shoes she’d given her to wear for the earlier taster day at the school, which got her opening up about missing her girls, with Sophie and older sister Rosie having left Weatherfield.

But soon, Mick, having stabbed Kit in a shocking twist, made his way onto the roof. Sally was quick to stand up to Mick, who told her: “If I was a betting man, I’d say I’ll win,” as Sally held onto a metal pipe. She put it down and remained defiant, quickly making Mick reflect on what he’d done.

“Please don’t hurt Sally,” a tearful Joanie said as she emerged from her hiding spot. Mick apologised to his daughter and in her final words to Mick, Sally promised him that she’d look after Joanie and Shanice and give the girls a more positive upbringing.

And the scenes had Corrie fans flocking to social media. @swarlanations said: “‘Please don’t hurt Sally’. Sobbing. Sally has new girls now. Rosie and Sophie who? #Corrie.”
