BREAKING: Nikola Jokic Reveals Bold Take on Lakers-Mavs Trade for Luka Doncic, Anthony Davis
As the NBA world continues to understand the Dallas Mavericks’ shocking trade of Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic shared his perspective during the 2025 NBA All-Star Media Day.
Known for his friendship with Doncic, Jokic addressed the trade that has baffled many, reflecting on its implications for both teams and players across the league.
“I think both teams win [the trade],” Jokic told reporters. “I think Luka is a generational player, generational talent… He was building something [in Dallas]. I think he was hurt. I think it’s ‘good’ because players will take it more seriously… If you traded someone like that, I think it becomes a big thing and players will be more serious about it.”
The trade has sparked a broader conversation about the reality that virtually no one is untouchable in today’s NBA. Jokic suggested that the move could be a wake-up call to players, emphasizing the importance of always being prepared for unexpected changes.

Jokic added a personal note by commenting on his friend’s absence at this year’s All-Star events. Due to various injuries, Doncic only played 22 games before All-Star voting closed, ultimately holding back his candidacy. Doncic became a staple of All-Star weekend after earning a nod every season, beginning with his sophomore campaign.
“It’s weird because we always have a good night before the game,” Jokic said.
Only time will tell how this trade will play out. The Mavericks are betting on the short-term potential of a group led by Kyrie Irving and Davis while they’re already in their 30s. Irving has a player option this summer, but Dallas is optimistic about the outlook he’ll re-sign.
Davis is currently sidelined without a clear timetable for a return as he navigates a recovery plan from a left adductor strain. With many injuries across the depth chart, including extended absences for Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford, Dallas faces an uphill climb to achieve its goals this season amid a short-term title window.
The Lakers still need to secure a long-term commitment from Doncic, but they took the risk with the goal of a significant payoff. Los Angeles doesn’t have much time to win with LeBron James still on the roster, but Doncic is viewed as the face of the franchise for the long haul.
