WNBA Legend Candace Parker Reveals Who She Believes Could Be The Next “Face of the League” And Explains Why

The discussion surrounding the identity of the next “face of the league” is sparking substantial debate within the basketball community. In this regard, WNBA icon Candace Parker has stated her opinion on who may emerge as the next prominent figure in the league.
Parker was recently featured on TNT’s post-game show, where she outlined the essential attributes that the future face of the NBA should possess. She emphasized that this player needs to be an exemplary individual, a remarkable talent and a captivating presence. Furthermore, she asserted that Oklahoma City Thunder standout Shai Gilgeous-Alexander perfectly exemplifies these qualities.
“SGA. Who he is. How he is. His style. His aura.” Parker said.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has played 56 games for the Oklahoma City Thunder in the ongoing 2024-25 NBA season. He is currently averaging 32.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game. Thanks to his outstanding performance, the Thunder holds the top position in the Western Conference standings, with 46 wins and 11 losses.

Parker is undeniably one of the most outstanding players in WNBA history. The Los Angeles Sparks selected her as the first overall pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft. Over her 13 seasons with the Sparks, Parker also played two seasons for the Chicago Sky and concluded her career with one season at the Las Vegas Aces, winning a championship title with each franchise. While she inspires many young female basketball players, she recently shared that she drew motivation from Dominique Dawes and Florence Griffith Joyner during her upbringing.
“Outside of basketball, I was a huge fan of Dominique Dawes. I think what’s amazing about inspiration is that it inspires the next. … I had a Flo-Jo [Florence Joyner] do as well, and so Flo-Jo was someone that inspired me and showed me you can be all of these things as a black woman… Being able to see someone that looks like you is important in trying to accomplish anything.” Parker said
