The Phoenix Suns have had a disappointing season, currently sitting with a 27-31 record despite high expectations. Amid their struggles, the franchise attempted to strengthen its roster by acquiring Jimmy Butler to pair with Kevin Durant. However, the plan fell apart as Butler ultimately chose to join the Golden State Warriors.

With that move failing, speculation has grown around Durant’s future in Phoenix. According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Suns are expected to explore trading the superstar forward this offseason. Meanwhile, several teams have emerged as potential landing spots for Durant. Let’s take a closer look at the most likely options.

Kevin Durant’s Top Potential Destinations

Golden State Warriors

A reunion with the Warriors was nearly a reality before Durant personally declined the trade. According to NBA insider Shams Charania, the Suns and Warriors were in serious discussions about a deal before Durant ultimately shut down the move. Nevertheless, Durant made it clear that his decision had nothing to do with past tensions in Golden State.

“I just didn’t want to get traded midway through the season. It was nothing against my time with the Warriors, or I heard, because I don’t like Draymond,” he explained in an interview with ESPN.

A reunion with Stephen Curry could reestablish the championship dominance they displayed from 2017 to 2019. If the Warriors make a strong push in the offseason, Durant might be more open to the idea of reuniting with his former squad.

Houston Rockets

The Houston Rockets have been quietly preparing for a potential pursuit of Durant for some time. According to Hoops Wire’s Sam Amico, the Rockets are expected to make a serious push for the superstar this offseason. Last summer, Houston accumulated a significant amount of draft capital, reportedly with the intention of targeting Durant.

Now, with a core of young, talented players exceeding expectations, the Rockets could see Durant as the perfect veteran piece to elevate their team into contention. It could give Durant a fresh start in a system that would allow him to be the primary scoring option while pairing him with the rising duo of Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun could accelerate their rebuild.

Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks have made some bold moves this season, including the blockbuster trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. However, even after that deal, The Athletic reported that the Mavericks had “dreams” of forming a superteam by adding Durant alongside Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis.

This scenario remains a possibility in the upcoming offseason. If Dallas successfully lands Durant, they would enter the 2025 season with a veteran corps of Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Durant. Additionally, bringing in a player of Durant’s caliber would energize a fan base still reeling from the departure of Doncic.

Miami Heat

The Miami Heat have been in the midst of their own trade saga involving Jimmy Butler. But a potential deal for Durant could be in the cards as well. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported that the Heat are the most likely destination for Durant if the Suns do indeed trade him.

Additionally, the Heat were reportedly Durant’s second choice when he requested a trade out of Brooklyn in 2022. With the Heat already facing pressure to reinvigorate their roster, Durant’s addition could help reignite their championship aspirations.

Wherever Durant lands, his contributions will be significant. With averaging 26.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game this season in 45 games, Durant remains one of the league’s most dominant players. It will be interesting to see where he ends up next.
