San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama has been ruled out for the season.

That was the shocking news that millions of fans saw on Thursday afternoon.

Wembanyama is expected to miss the rest of the season after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, the team announced Thursday. His condition was discovered after Wembanyama participated in NBA All-Star Weekend.

Wembanyama is a force of nature on both ends of the floor, possessing a generational combination of size, length, athleticism, and skill. His presence will certainly be missed.

Unfortunately, Victor Wembanyama’s remarkable second NBA season has come to a sudden and harrowing end, and it could likely affect him even further.

CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn noted Thursday that many NBA players have had their careers interrupted or even ended by blood clots before. He would mention Chris Bosh and Mirza Teletovic as two examples.

“This is a medical condition that has ended careers,” Quinn said. “Most notably, Chris Bosh was still an All-Star when he had his first clot. Mirza Teletovic, a good role player for the Milwaukee Bucks, blood clots ended his career as well.

“We hope this is an isolated incident. There are cases in recent NBA history of players having an isolated incident just like this who came back just fine.”

The San Antonio Spurs now have to figure out how they can still make the playoffs without Victor Wembanyama.

Following a stellar rookie campaign, Wembanyama had the team playing well enough to fight for a play-in spot.

Not only that, Wembanyama was the favorite for Defensive Player of the Year.

His year will now end with him averaging 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in 46 games this season. He’s led the league in blocks in back-to-back years, recording 3.6 and 3.8 per game.
