Shaquille O’Neal Voices Concerns Over NIL Era, Questions If High-Paid College Athletes Lose Motivation To Reach The NBA

The NCAA introduced the NIL policy in June 2021, marking a significant shift in the landscape of college athletics. While the NIL era presents numerous opportunities for many athletes to thrive, Shaquille O’Neal has expressed his apprehensions regarding the implications of this evolving situation.

In a recent episode of the Big Podcast With Shaq, O’Neal discussed how highly paid NIL athletes may lose their motivation and drive to excel. He emphasized that the NBA should be considered the ultimate goal for these NIL athletes.

“I think it’s definitely gonna hurt people because, for people that have nothing, when you get something, it takes the pressure off. But that something should be the final prize. The final prize should be the NBA. I know a cat—I don’t wanna say his name—who’s getting paid $7 million to play for one year. Like, where is the motivation?” O’Neal said.

NIL, an acronym for Name, Image, and Likeness, signifies the rights that collegiate athletes possess to monetize their personal brands via endorsements and various commercial ventures.

A deep dive into the deep rotation’s Stay Ready Crew with Noa Dalzell
The Boston Celtics have by most accounts the best top six players in the entire NBA to match their league-best regular season record. So, it can be easy to forget about the rest of the team. The so-called “Stay Ready Crew” mostly does just that — keep themselves in the right frame of mind and state of health in case their number is called. And those numbers do get called, with players like Oshae Brissett and Lamar Stevens bringing energy and matchup-dependent options that have sparked wins for Boston, while the sharpshooting duo of Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser wreak havoc on opposing defenses. And if it were not for the likes of Luke Kornet and Neemias Queta defying expectations as reserve big men, you can be sure there would be less wins to the Celtics’ name this season. Which players matter most to the team’s title aspirations? Which might be on the move ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline? What talent does Boston have in the pipeline in Maine? And who will see the floor in the postseason? To answer all of these key questions not quite getting the attention they deserve, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast linked up with Celtics Blog’s Noa Dalzell. The self-proclaimed Boston bench beat reporter who has a bead on a certain crew that stays ready, join us in a deep dive into the Celtics’ reserves. Gearing up for a Brooklyn Nets-Boston Celtics collision with Nick Fay
The Boston Celtics will face the Brooklyn Nets later this week with the Eastern Conference’s top spot potentially at stake, and while a bit of the wind has been taken out of the proverbial sails of the matchup with Nets star Kevin Durant out for the game with a sprained MCL as well as an outside shot of Marcus Smart missing the contest with a contused knee, it will still be a very important game for the Celtics. More data for a potential postseason collision, the aforementioned top spot in play, and a chance to see if Boston will play the way they should despite the absence of KD all loom large. The growth of Brooklyn bigs Nick Claxton and Ben Simmons also figures to be a point of concern, and any time the team crosses paths with Kyrie Irving, things get intense. To that end, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast linked up with the host of the Off the Glass “Brooklyn Buzz” podcast Nick Fay to talk all things Celtics-Nets. The foursome get into how Durant’s absence may impact the MVP race, what sort of trade targets each squad might have interest in at the 2023 NBA trade deadline, and more. Recently, Shaquille O’Neal urged fans to start including Curry in these GOAT conversations. Additionally, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr supported O’Neal’s statement during a recent interview on the 95.7 The Game podcast.

“I think he’s dead on because Steph is the most unique superstar of all time. He broke barriers, he changed the game. I love that Shaq is bringing that up because from a skills standpoint, it’s not even close. He is the greatest ever from a skills standpoint.” Kerr said.

Curry is currently leading the Warriors in the 2024-25 NBA season. The Warriors hold the 6th spot in the Western Conference standings, with a record of 35 wins and 28 losses.
