United States President Donald Trump made a huge announcement involving the late Kobe Bryant this Thursday that should leave NBA fans excited.

The returning president hosted a reception at the White House to honor Black History Month, during which he revealed his plans to have statues built to honor several prominent Black figures in the National Garden of American Heroes.

Bryant will be one such figure, with Trump also planning to have statues built to honor Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, Jackie Robinson, Martin Luther King Jr., and Muhammad Ali.

Several prominent Black females, including Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Billie Holliday, Coretta Scott King, and Aretha Franklin, will also have statues sculpted in their honor.

“During Black History Month, we pay tribute to these heroes and so many others not simply because they’re Black heroes but also because they’re truly American heroes who inspire all of us,” Trump said.

Kobe Bryant was killed in a helicopter accident on January 26, 2020, and Trump’s announcement comes a few weeks removed from the five-year anniversary of the former Lakers star’s death. Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, were among nine people killed in the crash in Calabasas, California.

Bryant was not a huge Trump fan and spoke out against the Republican during his first term as president, accusing him of stirring dissension and anger in “2017.”

As to whether Trump knew about the criticism is unknown as he never responded to it. But he paid tribute to the former shooting guard after his death, offering condolences to his family.

He’s now set to bestow another honor on the fallen star with a statue.
