NBA legend Dwyane Wade has revealed the early warning signs of kidney cancer that he initially brushed off before his diagnosis in December 2023. The Miami Heat icon, now 43, admitted he ignored symptoms like a slow urinary stream and occasional stomach cramps, only to later discover a cancerous lesion on his kidney.

Wade, a three-time NBA champion, shared his experience in an interview with Today, explaining how a routine check-up prompted by his father’s prostate cancer diagnosis led to the shocking discovery. “I had some cramps, some pain at times in my stomach that I did not understand,” he said. “But I didn’t think anything of it.”

During his medical evaluation, Wade underwent an MRI, which revealed an abnormality on his kidney. Initially uncertain whether it was cancerous, doctors advised immediate removal to prevent potential spread. “[My doctor said] in the next five or 10 years, if this is cancer, [it can] not only spread through your kidneys, but it [can] also spread through your lungs and eventually to your brain,” Wade recalled.

The surgery confirmed the lesion was cancerous, reinforcing the importance of early detection. “Thank God that we caught it early,” Wade said. “This wasn’t something that was able to grow. It was about 3 centimeters on my kidney.”

The experience forced Wade to reassess his life and priorities. “I spent a lot of time writing in my journal, thinking about what I want the next 40 years to look like,” he shared.

Breaking down Boston’s Game 2 win vs. the Pacers, what to expect in Game 3
The Boston Celtics defeated the Indiana Pacers 126-110 in Game 2 of the NBA’s 2024 Eastern Conference finals thanks to a career playoff-high matching 40 points from Jaylen Brown. But it came at the expense of backup big man Luke Kornet’s wrist being sprained on a team already thin at center; will Boston be okay with Kornet on the bench?. On the other side of the court, however, we saw Pacers star Tyrese Halliburton leave the game injured in the second half with what initially appeared to be a re-aggravation of the hamstring injury that kept him out for significant time this season. Will he be able to play when the series shifts pack to Indiana for Game 3, and if not, is a sweep incoming? The hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast reacted to the win postgame from the Garden (excuse the Wi-Fi issues, please), seeing some small ball looks that paid off — and defensive lapses that did not.  The Celtics Lab podcast is brought to you by Prize Picks and Gametime. A deep dive into the deep rotation’s Stay Ready Crew with Noa Dalzell
The Boston Celtics have by most accounts the best top six players in the entire NBA to match their league-best regular season record. So, it can be easy to forget about the rest of the team. The so-called “Stay Ready Crew” mostly does just that — keep themselves in the right frame of mind and state of health in case their number is called. And those numbers do get called, with players like Oshae Brissett and Lamar Stevens bringing energy and matchup-dependent options that have sparked wins for Boston, while the sharpshooting duo of Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser wreak havoc on opposing defenses. And if it were not for the likes of Luke Kornet and Neemias Queta defying expectations as reserve big men, you can be sure there would be less wins to the Celtics’ name this season. Which players matter most to the team’s title aspirations? Which might be on the move ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline? What talent does Boston have in the pipeline in Maine? And who will see the floor in the postseason? To answer all of these key questions not quite getting the attention they deserve, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast linked up with Celtics Blog’s Noa Dalzell. The self-proclaimed Boston bench beat reporter who has a bead on a certain crew that stays ready, join us in a deep dive into the Celtics’ reserves. Wade’s openness about the experience highlights the importance of routine check-ups and seeking medical advice early, no matter how small the symptoms may seem.
