When it comes to sports viewership and player salaries, the NBA has long outshined the NHL. However, this year’s All-Star Game told a different story, as the NHL’s innovative approach captured the spotlight.

The NHL’s format, which featured a competitive face-off between four national teams, brought a fresh energy to the event. The excitement around the tournament even sparked discussions about whether the NBA could borrow elements of the NHL’s success to reinvigorate its own All-Star Weekend.

NBA insider Brian Windhorst recently weighed in on the comparisons. Windhorst was quick to question the narrative that the NHL’s success automatically highlighted the NBA’s shortcomings.

Number one, congratulations to the NHL. It was a terrific event. Why does the NHL’s success have to be called the NBA’s failures, which I’ve seen repeatedly over the last few days? Why does that have to be? What does one have to do with the other?” Windhorst said.

Still, the conversation around the NBA adopting a more international approach isn’t off the table. Windhorst then noted that the NHL’s format worked well because it tapped into national pride, something the NBA could potentially leverage.

“It’s an in-season tournament. The NBA had an in-season tournament first. Now, it’s an effective in-season tournament because it’s countries, and maybe the NBA should look at that,” he added.

Windhorst Breaks Down Why NHL’s All-Star Game Format Won’t Return Soon

Brian Windhorst also pointed out a key detail that many fans may have missed. According to him, this year’s NHL’s Four Nations format was more of a one-time spectacle than a long-term tradition.

Next year, they are the Olympics in Milan. I read a report today that said the NHL said they will not hold it in 2027 or 2029. And in 2028, there is going to be the Hockey World Cup, so they’re not having it. So this is the last one of these for the decade,” he said.

The NHL’s format may not be returning soon. Yet, its impact has already sparked conversations about the future of the NBA’s midseason classic as a country-based face-off could introduce a fresh dynamic to NBA All-Star Weekend.
