Former NBA Champion Breaks Down Why Cleveland Cavaliers Still Have More To Prove Despite Their Top Seeding In The East

The Cavaliers are currently in an impressive position in the ongoing 2024-25 NBA season, holding the top spot in the Eastern Conference standings with 46 wins and 10 losses. However, a former NBA champion remains dissatisfied with Donovan Mitchell-led Cavaliers’ success.
Kendrick Perkins appeared on a recent episode of NBA Countdown on ESPN, where he analyzed the Cavaliers’ prospects for winning the championship this season. During the discussion, he highlighted the significance of the Cavaliers’ current status as the top seed in the Eastern Conference. However, the 2008 NBA champion emphasized that despite this impressive ranking, the team still has a lot to prove in the ongoing 2024-25 NBA season.
“They haven’t earned respect. And name me a time when a Donovan Mitchell-led team has reached the NBA Finals or the Conference Finals… It’s never happened. Respect is earned, not given. I get that they have the best record, they have to go out and prove it. Do they have the personnel to get it done? Absolutely, but again it’s just like the Oklahoma City Thunder, they got to show it,” Perkins said.
The Cavaliers kicked off their regular season with a phenomenal 15-game winning streak. This marks only the fourth occasion in NBA history where a team has started the season at an astonishing 15–0. Recently, Perkins has been more outspoken with his opinions, including a bold statement about Joel Embiid.
