American Idol Top 24 Performances End — Vote For Season 23 Contestants

Each contestant is now mentored by Jelly Roll, this season’s Artist in Residence. He began mentoring the contestants during Hollywood Week and will be there for them all the way until the finale. This is the first time Idol has ever done Artist In Residence.

The Judges Predicted Canaan James Hill Could Win The Show

17-year-old Canaan James Hill impressed the judges so much after he auditioned with “I Need Your Glory,” that they eventually awarded him the coveted Platinum Ticket, which goes to only three singers per season. The Platinum Ticket allows them to skip the first round of Hollywood Week.

When he finally sang during the Showstopper round of Hollywood Week on Idol, the judges were floored. After singing the gospel anthem “Never Would Have Made It” by Marvin Sapp, all three judges jumped to their feet in applause. They also said that Canaan might be the the “Top 1” in the competition. Will Canaan Make It Through To The Top 20?

Canaan performed the Fred Hammond and Radical for Christ song “Glory to Glory to Glory” for his Top 24 performance.

He struggled a little bit, admittedly dealing with some allergies and having to lower the key of his song in rehearsals. However, he was determined to sing it in the higher key for the live performance. His voice was a little more raspy than normal, but his voice still sounded incredible.

Carrie Underwood called his allergies a “blessing,” while Luke Bryan praised his “dynamic” voice. The “Love You, Miss You, Mean It” singer told Canaan, “Your ability to have church on the beach is pretty amazing.”

Lionel Richie challenged him to perform songs that are outside of his gospel genre.

We will find out if he safe from elimination on Idol’s Sunday, April 20th episode, which will also have a gospel special in honor of the Easter holiday. Watch his incredible performance of “Glory to Glory to Glory” below.
