A Boston Celtics Festivus for the rest of us to get some gripes off of our chests
The Boston Celtics are seemingly stuck at around .500 midway through yet another season that was supposed to be the campaign that saw them finally ascend to contender status while a large part of the roster (and for that matter, the NBA) is in the league’s health and safety protocol after testing positive for COVID-19 despite the majority of the team being vaccinated. Between all this, the political zoo appearing on our televisions and cell phones on a daily basis, and a host of other disappointing to downright frightening things going on in the world at the moment, there is no limit to the things fans of the Celtics could — and should — be complaining about. To that end, on this week’s episode of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast, hosts Justin Quinn, Alex Goldberg, and Cameron Tabatabaie host a Festivus-inspired airing of the grievances for all things Boston Celtics, NBA, and beyond. We try to keep it mostly light in a bit of a dark patch in the NBA schedule with all the COVID-related news currently gripping the league (and put most of the pandemic related talk further towards the end), and touch on the team’s recent play and signing of former No. 10 pick Joe Johnson to keep things balanced. So, be sure to check out the clip embedded above to hear all there is to gripe about in the Celtics media sphere on up with your three favorite NBA curmudgeons. Assessing Boston’s start to ’23-24 season, NBA 2k official season sim with Ronnie 2k, Yossi Gozlan
The Boston Celtics just beat the New York Knicks to kick off their 2023-24 campaign for an auspicious start of their pursuit of an NBA-record 18th title, and if their campaign ends anything like the official season simulation by the folks over at NBA 2k, Celtics fans will finally get back on top to pass their rival Los Angeles Lakers as the team with the most championships won. What did we take from the first game of Boston’s season? What can the NBA 2k simulation underscore about what we saw on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden vs. the Knicks? The folks at the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast put together a rapid reaction to the real-life road win to start the 2023-24 season with HoopsHype’s Yossi Gozlan, then interviewed NBA 2k brand ambassador Ronnie 2k about how Boston won it all in the digital version of the season. This episode is as packed full of stuff as one might expect, so buckle up as we dive head first into the quest for Banner 18. The Celtics Lab podcast is sponsored by FanDuel. Navigating Boston’s ‘big’ cap concerns with Yossi Gozlan
The Boston Celtics and Grant Williams could not come to terms on a rookie scale extension for the Tennessee alumnus ahead of the 2022-23 NBA season, with Williams instead electing to bet on himself. How could this play out for both parties given we’re hearing rumbles of interest from opposing teams? How does the looming free agency of Al Horford affect Boston’s cap space outlook? The backdrop for Boston’s offseason financial concerns for their frontcourt also takes shape with a likely cap spike and looming media rights deal that could transform labor negotiations ahead of the league’s next collective bargaining agreement, so what might something like a hard cap mean for Boston? To get a look at some lingering but timely issues from a teambuilding perspective, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast linked up with HoopsHype cap guru Yossi Gozlan to talk over the contours of the Celtics’ and NBA’s cap management concerns, with an unvarnished view of the team’s start thrown in for good measure. Your usual hosts Cameron Tabatabaie and Justin Quinn also touch on Kyrie Irving’s suspension in the context of a lot of bad NBA news percolating to the surface all at once this week. Boston gets to work teambuilding with Gallinari deal, Brogdon trade with Kory Waldron
The Boston Celtics were, by most accounts, not going to make much if any moves until the weekend got here. But whether that was a smoke screen or whether a happy accident set the Celtics team building wheels into motion, the team that represented the NBA’s Eastern Conference in the 2022 NBA Finals just got quite a bit better. It started with the team landing long-coveted veteran wing Danilo Gallinari, and went into hyperdrive with the trade for Indiana Pacers point guard Malcolm Brogdon, the Celtics sending out a top-12 protected first-round pick, center Daniel Theis, wing Aaron Nesmith, and three rarely-played deep rotation players. To get a feel for how Brogdon will impact a Finals squad that gave up no core players to bring on the Indiana floor general, we brought on host of the Off the Glass “Full Access Pacers” podcast, Kory Waldron. Your usual hosts Alex Goldberg and Justin Quinn linked up with Waldron to talk all things Brogdon trade, Celtics team building, and plenty more offseason action.
