Mavericks Get Much-Needed Good News After Series of Injuries - Heavy Sports

The Dallas Mavericks have faced significant challenges in the 2024-25 NBA season due to major injuries to key players. These setbacks have disrupted their roster and affected their performance on the court, making it difficult for the team to maintain momentum as they navigate through the season.

On February 2, 2025, the Mavericks made a surprising decision by trading their star player, Luka Doncic, to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis. This blockbuster deal received significant criticism, but many fans were excited about Davis joining the team.

Davis debuted with the Mavericks on February 8. He delivered an impressive performance, scoring 26 points, grabbing 16 rebounds, and providing seven assists in a 116–105 victory over the Houston Rockets. Unfortunately, he strained his left adductor during the game, which is expected to keep him sidelined for several weeks.

Compounding the Mavericks’ difficulties, Kyrie Irving tore his ACL on March 3, ending his season. According to the Mavericks’ injury report from ESPN, several other players are also unavailable.

Jaden Hardy is out with a right ankle sprain, Dereck Lively II has a stress fracture in his right ankle, Daniel Gafford has a knee sprain in his right leg, and Olivier-Maxence Prosper is out for the season due to surgery. Additionally, P.J. Washington has an ankle injury, and Kai Jones has a quadriceps injury. Brandon Williams is questionable due to tightness in his left hamstring. Currently, the Mavericks are left with only seven healthy players as the season takes a challenging turn.

Much of the conversation ahead of the 2021-22 NBA season circulating in the NBA media has revolved around something that isn’t necessarily a basketball conversation, though it has pervaded virtually all aspects of contemporary life. We are of course talking about COVID-19 vaccination in the league, and in particular some especially vaccine-resistant players who occupy positions of considerable influence. But rather than making the story about those individuals, the hosts of the “Celtics Lab” podcast Justin Quinn, Cam Tabatabaie, and Alex Goldberg dug deep in the hopes of re-setting the narratives a bit surrounding how we should engage those persons and the issue of vaccine hesitancy (and more pernicious anti-vaccine sentiments) in society more generally. It can be hard for some of us in the media to see Kyrie Irving, LeBron James, and others resistant to making choices for the common good, but a steady stream of fan and media ire is almost certainly going to do little to change their minds on how they can best use their platforms (and bodies) to make us all safer (and teams perhaps more successful) in the midst of a pandemic.  To that end, we were incredibly lucky to have Andy Slavitt of the “In the Bubble with Andy Slavitt” podcast to talk on the intersection of public health in an era of COVID-19, the NBA and society at large. The Dallas Mavericks’ injury hurdles have complicated their journey in the ongoing 2024-25 NBA season. With several key players sidelined, the team’s depth has been tested, creating a tough road ahead as they strive for success. In light of these circumstances, head coach Jason Kidd has publicly expressed his concerns regarding the team’s limited roster availability.

“I’ve never seen this… Where you can’t take someone out to rest them because we had no one to put in.” Kidd said in a recent interview.

The Mavericks currently hold the 10th spot in the Western Conference standings with a 32-33 record. They will play their next game against the San Antonio Spurs at the AT&T Center.
