Chris Paul Reveals He Got Clearance For NBA Skills Challenge Move Before Disqualification With Victor Wembanyama
The 2024-25 NBA All-Star Weekend brought no shortage of excitement, but one of its most talked-about moments didn’t come from a high-flying dunk or a last-second three-pointer. Instead, it was a controversial strategy used by San Antonio Spurs veterans Chris Paul and Victor Wembanyama during the Skills Challenge.
During the event, rather than attempting to make their shots properly, they emptied the rack of basketballs as quickly as possible. The move led to their immediate disqualification.
In an interview with Taylor Rooks, Chris Paul recently opened up about the incident and defended their actions. According to Paul, the duo had actually received clearance to try the unusual tactic before the event began.
“It was an idea, and it didn’t work out. They did say that it was OK to do that,” Paul said.
Initially, much of the backlash centered on Paul. However, Wembanyama later revealed that the idea was actually his.

On Wednesday night, the San Antonio Spurs secured a 126-116 win over the Dallas Mavericks at the AT&T Center. While the victory was significant for the team, it also marked a historic milestone for veteran guard Chris Paul, even before he stepped onto the court.
The matchup against the Mavericks was Paul’s 1,336th career game. It moved him to 17th place on the NBA’s all-time games played list. Paul contributed to the Spurs’ victory by logging 25 minutes of action. He finished the game with nine points, two rebounds, and nine assists.
In his first season with San Antonio, Paul has embraced a leadership role on the team. So far this season, he has averaged 8.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 7.9 assists per game.
